The Telluride Academy has a new interim Executive Director. Ophir resident Larry Rosen, an Academy employee since 1998, has accepted the position, effective immediately.
In the meantime the Board of Directors of Telluride Academy will continue its search for a permanent, full time Executive Director who will oversee the ongoing success and future growth of the organization.
The Telluride Academy is a progressive outdoor adventure camp, offering approximately 100 regional, national and international camp programs to 800 campers, ages 4-18, primarily during the summer months. Originally created in 1981 by founder Wendy Brooks, this summer marks Telluride Academy's 25th anniversary.
Rosen began working with Telluride Academy in the spring of 1998 as the Telluride Summer Research Center Coordinator, providing conference services and lodging to 250 visiting scientists each summer. Rosen continued oversight of the TSRC for the Academy until successfully transitioning its administration to Telluride's Pinhead Institute in 2003. In May of 1999, Rosen accepted the position of Assistant Director for Telluride Academy and has since been instrumental in all administrative and program facets of Academy operations. Rosen assumed the title of Director of Finance and Administration in January 2003. Recently, Rosen expanded his business knowledge by enrolling in an accounting program at Adams State College and by forming his own small business, San Juan Computer, Accounting and Technology Solutions. Rosen has agreed to put his educational goals on hold to step in as Telluride Academy Interim Executive Director until a permanent, full time director is hired.
"I am confident of my abilities to competently lead the Telluride Academy," says Rosen. "I maintain a familiarity with the organization's staff, families and contributors, as well as its requirements for success, and I know the Telluride community. I welcome the challenge of building upon the success Telluride Academy has achieved, and the impact it has made on our community's children."
Rosen and his wife, Heather, relocated to the Telluride region from their home state of Connecticut in the fall of 1993. An avid outdoorsman and self-proclaimed "topographic junkie," Rosen has hiked, biked, floated, skied and explored the many mountain, desert, and canyon regions of the Colorado Plateau and is extremely knowledgeable of many of the region's trail systems and geography. As a backcountry leader, Rosen shares this wealth of knowledge with enthusiastic campers, teens and parents looking for a sense of adventure. He has led Academy programs including High Mountain Adventure, Steppin' Out Teen Adventure Series, Canyon Passages and Parent Hikes and Backpacks. The Rosens completed building their home in Ophir in 2000, where they have lived since 1997.
Rosen shares administrative responsibilities with Telluride Academy Program Director Nancy Parkinson and newly hired Registrar and Office Manager Kelly Dellinger.
