Academy celebrates 25 years
Telluride Daily Planet - 5/13/05

Adulthood is tough enough without having the Telluride Academy in town. What would you rather do, go to work, or explore Havasupai, paddle through the San Juan Islands, perform original theater on the big stage, go whitewater rafting in Ecuador, or saddle up in Echo Basin? That's a typical summer for Telluride Academy children and teens. Ah, youth ...

The camp that started in founder Wendy Brooks' backyard is celebrating 25 years this summer and the entire community - yes, adults, too - is invited to a party slated for July.

Since the early 1980s, the nonprofit organization has served thousands of local, regional and visiting children. In late July, the Academy invites everyone to join together to celebrate those 25 years of adventure with a weekend of parties and events, a community ice cream social and the unveiling of a yearbook that chronicles a shared history.

As a part of the anniversary celebration, the Academy in July will welcome to the Telluride and Mountain Village region a group of more than 20 teens from Bhutan, Vietnam and Ireland.

This year's Global Mountain Theater will return the favor to those students who have hosted Telluride-area campers over the last few years. The multi-national group will reunite with their American friends to participate in two weeks of community and outdoor events that will culminate in an original and cultural performance.

A limited number of camp spots are still available for children from age 4 through their teens in sessions that begin June 13. The Academy is committed to providing challenging outdoor and educational experiences for children, regardless of financial backgrounds. Tuition assistance is available based on a sliding scale of need. In addition, translation services are available for native Spanish speakers. For more information, stop by offices located on the second floor of the Telluride High School, call 728-5311 or visit www.tellurideacademy.com.
